First Generation V-Series
Cadillac’s famous V-Series is now in its fourth generation, with each cycle building on the success of the previous generation. Perhaps one of the most recognizable vehicles from the first generation was XLR hard-top, which debuted in 2005. Using General Motors’ most complex engine, the Northstar engine series, the XLR-V produced an impressive 443 horsepower with 414 pounds-per-foot of torque.
Right around the $100,000 mark, the XLR-V was one of General Motors’ most expensive creations up to that point. It was built on the same platform as the Chevy Corvette, sitting on 19-inch wheels and fully equipped with large brakes and a six-speed automatic transmission. Following the XLR-V, Cadillac supercharged the Northstar engine to fit the new STS-V. This upgrade boosted the horsepower by 26 and the torque by 25.
2nd Generation V-Series
By the time Cadillac rolled out the second generation, the V-Series’ notoriety had fueled anticipation among luxury car enthusiasts who were eager to see what Cadillac would come up with next. The XLR and STS were discontinued as Cadillac focused all efforts on the CTS. The CTS-V was introduced in 2009 with a 6.2-liter LSA EATON supercharged V8 engine. With this small-block engine, the CTS-V was fitted for ultimate driver control and rear-wheel drive.
The following year, General Motors decided to meet the growing demand for a 5-door V-series sports wagon with a powerful 556-horsepower engine. Available in automatic or manual transmission, the CTS-V wagon came with Brembo brakes and Magnetic Ride Control. Later that year, the CTS-V coupe was built with similar equipment, including a matching dual airflow grille.
3rd Generation V-Series
The third generation of Cadillac’s V-Series was a game-changer for the auto industry. The 2016 CTS-V became Cadillac’s most powerful vehicle of all time. In just 3.6 seconds, the CTS-V could blast off from a dead stop to an impressive 60 miles per hour. Its LT4 supercharged V8 engine produced 640 horsepower with a top speed capability of 200 miles per hour.
Other notable vehicles from the third generation include the XTS Vsport trim, which produced 410 horsepower using a 3.6-liter turbocharged engine. Cadillac also put out a Vsport CTS with a slightly higher output of 420 horsepower. Vsport trims were recently discontinued, starting with the CTS in 2019 and followed by the XTS in 2020.
Also part of the third generation, the ATS-V was built to rival the Audi RS4 and BMW M4 and M3. The ATS-V was the first of the V-series to use a V6 engine (the LF4), offering 464 horsepower and 445 pounds-per-foot of torque. The ATS-V was also discontinued in 2019.
4th Generation V-Series
In 2020, Cadillac ushered in the fourth generation of its now-legendary V-series with an all-new line-up. Starting with the new CT6-V, Cadillac artfully incorporated design elements from its 2016 concept car, the Cadillac Escala. The brand new Blackwing V8 is Cadillac’s first-ever twin-turbo DOHC with a clean sheet engine design. It’s a 4.2-liter engine that’s paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission for seamless speed.
The fourth-generation CT5 and CT4 also deviated from the previous small block V8 engine design. The CT5-V runs on General Motors’ 3-liter twin-turbo LGY V6 while the CT4-V uses a 2.7-liter turbo inline 4-cylinder engine. V trims are set to replace Cadillac’s Vsport trims of the past, serving as the beginning tier of the line of performance models. Innovative features on higher-level V trims will continue to define Cadillac as an industry leader in luxury design. As each generation brings something new and exciting to the table, it’s clear that the V-Series isn’t going anywhere but up.
