Cadillac XT5: Not Your Everyday Crossover Luxury SUV

A popular Cadillac SUV model, a gray 2020 Cadillac XT5, is parked in front of a modern home near Fort Worth, TX.

If you’re in the market for a smaller luxury SUV, the vast quantity of available options can at first seem overwhelming. It’s not uncommon for buyers to reach ‘decision overload’ and revert to choosing what’s familiar. That might be whatever’s parked in their neighbors’ driveways, or perhaps it’s the familiar SUV that always pops up in the carpool pickup line because, after all, there’s safety in numbers. But maybe the styling seems dated, or that model is so common that it feels too vanilla. Perhaps you’re looking for something fresh and different. Have you considered a Cadillac SUV model?

Yes, we all know the venerable Escalade, SUV of choice for jet setters and billionaire moguls alike, but maybe you weren’t thinking of going quite that large. What you may not know is that there is a full lineup of Cadillac SUV models to choose from. If you’re looking for something along the lines of a crossover, take a look at the XT5. The Cadillac XT5––short for Crossover Touring 5––is brimming with cutting-edge design and sophisticated engineering attributes, including advanced safety features, performance-enhancing technology, and a long list of refined luxury touches that land this compact SUV on even the most discerning buyer’s list. The exterior’s elegant lines blend well with its overall aggressive, sporty stance, giving the XT5 its distinctive, head-turning curb appeal.

Since it debuted in 2016, the Cadillac XT5 is the brand’s best selling SUV. The model faces stiff competition in the midsize SUV segment, including the Acura RDX and the Lexus RX 350, but holds its own due to the wide range of safety and comfort features found throughout the model lineup, as well as XT5’s distinctive styling and variety of engine and powertrain options.

Highlighted Features

Along with unparalleled luxury, Cadillac has equipped the popular XT5 with an impressive 63 cubic feet of cargo space, and its 60/40 fold-down seats and power liftgate make accessing that space customizable, easy, and hassle-free. With seating for five, the cabin is spacious and comfortable, provides ample room for driver and passengers, and stays quiet at high speeds.

Cadillac has added impressive safety features to its XT5. Some highlights include the Safety Alert Seat, which sends a vibration pattern via the seat cushion to alert the driver of a potential collision either on the left or the right side of the vehicle; Forward Collision Alert, which warns the driver of an imminent collision and has the ability to initiate a braking sequence if needed. The handy Teen Driver feature lets you set driving parameters, such as radio volume control, to keep your young driver safe. This feature also allows you to keep a record of your teenager’s driving and issues a report card to keep track of important data such as drive speed.

Cadillac understands that entertainment has become a critical factor for consumers when considering their next vehicle purchase. Their answer is the CUE, or Cadillac User Experience, which comes standard on all XT5 models, and includes an enhanced 8” touchscreen infotainment and navigation system that provides 3D maps, available Doppler weather reports, and a customizable home page to dial in your favorite shortcuts, radio stations, and downloaded apps. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities are wired in for ease of smartphone integration. Tech-savvy drivers will appreciate these features, along with a plethora of tech built into the XT5’s safety systems.

Available Trims

The XT5 is available in three trims, starting with the XT5 Luxury. A wallet-friendly entry price point of just $44,095 puts this luxury SUV within reach for buyers that thought they couldn’t afford a luxury option. The XT5 Luxury comes standard with a 2.0L Turbo 4-cylinder engine that puts out a respectable 237 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. In addition, with this engine, the XT5 offers 28 MPG on the highway and 21 MPG in the city.

The XT5 Luxury offers a long list of standard safety features, including Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Alert, Safety alert seat, Front and Rear Park Assist, and a handy rotary controller for ease of use. Infotainment abounds with a Bose premium 8-speaker audio system, 4G LTE WiFi hotspot capability, and the Cadillac User Experience 8” driver display screen/information center, all standard. Comfort and luxury take center stage with loads of standard features, including cabin humidity sensor and particulate/odor filter, a 6-way power front passenger seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and power windows, door locks, and tilt/telescoping steering column.

At a starting MSRP of $48,795, the next step up is the XT5 Premium Luxury, which adds an optional 310-hp 3.6L engine that Car and Driver calls “impressively quiet and well isolated from the cabin.” Optional all-wheel drive is available for around $2,000 more. Standard equipment includes a convenient hands-free power liftgate, upgraded console lighting, an interior movement sensor for added vehicle security, lane change alert with side blind zone alert safety systems, seat setting Memory Package, upgraded leather seating, and wireless charging. An Ultraview Power Sunroof is also standard.

At the top end of the XT5 family, the dynamic Sport comes standard with all-wheel drive and a 3.6L engine. Starting at $55,095, the XT5 Sport delivers breathtaking performance with the enhanced real-time damping suspension that senses and adjusts to road conditions every two milliseconds for a truly customized ride. 20” 12-spoke wheels with a pearl nickel finish are also standard.

Platinum Package: The Ultimate in Luxury

For highly discerning tastes, Cadillac offers the Platinum Package on both the Premium Luxury and XT5 Sport. The significantly upgraded interior includes a leather-wrapped instrument panel, microsuede headliner, upgraded trim and cabin lighting, and upgraded buttery-soft semi-aniline leather seats. Tech gets a boost with embedded navigation via the Cadillac user experience, Bose Performance Series 14-speaker sound, and all the contents of the Enhanced Visibility and Technology Package, which include a rear camera mirror with washer, color driver information display, color head-up display, HD Surround Vision, Rear Pedestrian Alert, and Automatic Parking Assist.
